Author Q&A

I enjoy being interviewed about my work. A question I was asked recently, well, two questions really, was:

Why a druid and why albinism?

I have always felt that druids are mysterious, and they were present in the Iron Age. A lot has been written about albinism in the past, sadly, often linked to persecution.  I wanted to explore the idea of feeling an outsider because of appearance, as well as the reality of living with such a condition. For example Abria’s eyes and skin are very sensitive.

Is anything about the Hawk Tribe based on an actual tribe?

I got the idea after watching an archaeology programme, where ancient human remains were found buried with the remains of birds. This made me wonder what the connection between the two could have been, so the tribe was pure imagination. I also found it interesting that the word ‘hawk’ can also mean someone who prefers the use of force and aggression rather than diplomacy.

Why the Iron Age setting?

I originally wrote a short story set in the time period, because I had never done it before. Nothing was written down, particularly in England. I saw that as an invitation to let my imagination run wild.

Have any writers influenced you?

All the time. When I began I had read pretty much everything on the crime fiction shelves in my local library. I continue to read an be amazed by others. I always feel that there is more to learn, which I love.

How long does it take to become a writer?

I feel that for me, it’s a process that won’t end for as long as i want to write.

Will there be more books about Abria?

Definitely. I am already working on her next adventure.
